TikTok DM Features: How to Use New Audio & Video Messages

TikTok is constantly evolving, and its latest update focuses on enhancing one of its most used functions: direct messaging. The platform has rolled out new TikTok DM features, including audio messages and expanded media attachments, to make conversations more dynamic and personal. This move brings TikTok's messaging capabilities closer to other major social platforms, reflecting the growing trend of private interactions online.

How to Use the New Audio Messages on TikTok

You can now send voice notes up to a minute long in your DMs. To record, simply press and hold the microphone icon next to the text input field. Be aware that the message sends as soon as you release the button, so it’s designed for quick, spontaneous communication. Here's a quick guide on how to manage your recording:

  • Release to Send: Let go of the record button to immediately send your voice note.
  • Swipe to Delete: If you make a mistake, swipe across the screen while recording to discard it.
  • Lock and Record: For longer messages, swipe up to lock the recording. This lets you record hands-free. You can then tap send or delete when you're done.

If you send a message by accident, don't worry—TikTok gives you a three-minute window to delete it after sending.

Sending More Images and Videos in DMs

In addition to audio, TikTok now allows you to send up to nine images or videos as attachments in a single message. You can select them directly from your device's camera roll or capture new content using the in-app TikTok camera. This upgrade makes sharing moments with friends or followers much more convenient and aligns TikTok with standard messaging app functionalities, creating a richer user experience.

Why These New TikTok DM Features Matter

These updates are more than just minor tweaks; they signify TikTok's commitment to building a more comprehensive communication hub. By improving its DM experience, TikTok encourages users to stay within the app for their social interactions. For creators and brands, this offers new ways to connect with audiences on a more personal level. These direct communication tools, when used effectively, can significantly boost your engagement and community building efforts. Enhanced DMs also support features like group chats, broadcast channels, and interactions during live streams, which, combined with strategies to increase your content's reach, can create a powerful marketing funnel.

TikTok has also implemented important safety measures alongside these features. Users under 16 cannot access DMs, and you cannot send an image or video in an initial message request to someone. These restrictions are designed to prevent the misuse of the platform's direct messaging tools and protect its community.
